History

Origin of W.L. Sleigh Ltd

The Sleigh name has been synonymous with Scottish transportation since 1889, when William Lowrie Sleigh left his job with the British Post Office to sell a newfangled invention called the "Penny Farthing", an early form of bicycle.

By 1907 he was selling motorcars and motorbikes, too. Following in his grandfather's footsteps, W. Lowrie Sleigh LVO founded W.L. Sleigh Ltd in 1974 with a dream of providing Scotland with the best-possible chauffeur drive service. William L. Sleigh, Lowrie's son, became managing director in 1997 and began diversifying the company into tourism services.

Holder of Royal Warrants

In the year 2000, William was extremely honoured to be granted three Royal Warrants as Motor Vehicle Hirer to the Royal Family in Scotland. The family's first Royal Warrant was awarded to Sir William Lowrie Sleigh in 1921 as Motor Engineers to His Majesty King George V. Other members of the family have also been priveleged to be grantees of Royal Warrants and serve the British Royal family in transportation service.

Official Virtuoso On-Site luxury service

Another huge step came in 2002 when W.L. Sleigh Ltd was invited to join Virtuoso as an official On-Site luxury service for Scotland. As a Virtuoso On-Site, we help plan all aspects of personalised guided tours of Scotland in our own vehicles and with our own driver/guides (or separate blue badge guides if required). We are currently the only Virtuoso On-Site that specialises exclusively in Scotland.

Formation of Sleigh Tours Scotland

In 2015, William took on business partner Russell Dunsmore to manage and expand the company's chauffeur services. Having built his own successful driver service over ten years. Russell knows the chauffeur business exceedingly well. The partnership enabled William to concentrate on serving an ever-increasing volume of tourism clients by forming SLEIGH TOURS SCOTLAND LTD as a sister company within the W.L. Sleigh Ltd group of companies.
